Young Carers Action Day – 15 March 2023

Young Carers Action Day, celebrated on Wednesday 15th March 2023, is an annual nationwide event organised by the Carers Trust aimed at raising awareness of the importance of young carers across the country. It has been celebrated for the last six years and helps to raise awareness for young carers who make massive contributions to their communities and families.

It is believed that as many as 1 in 5 secondary school-aged children have been or will be put in the position of being a young carer, often being responsible for a family member who is ill or disabled. Many young carers face unique struggles relating to caring at such a young age, including isolation, a damaged social life and reduced educational progression.

You may have previously heard of Young Carers Awareness Day, which has now been renamed to Young Carers Action Day. This important day is focused on what action we can take to support young carers. Plus, the age range as been extended to cover young carers up to the age of 25, so young adults can be included, too.

What is the theme for Young Carers Action Day 2023?
Each year, Young Carers Action Day has a theme. The theme for Young Carers Action Day 2023 is ‘Make Time for Young Carers’.
This theme encourages us all to think about how we can support young carers with their own health and wellbeing. Young carers need support from the adults around them to be able to balance their schoolwork, personal life and caring responsibilities, as well as look after their mental health.

How is Young Carers Action Day celebrated?
As well as raising awareness of the difficulties many young carers face, part of the purpose of Young Carers Action Day is to campaign for greater support for those affected. It is also a day to call for more action to support young and young adult carers and give them the extra bit of help they need to live full and healthy lives.  The day attracts widespread participation and public attention.
